Danish Debacle



Danish Braid was the Daring Baker's challenge this month. This is something I've always wanted to try but have never made. Everything started out really well. I made all my turns with no problems. Wow that was an upper body workout! The dough looked beautiful. I left mine in the refrigerator until the next morning so that I'd have fresh danish for breakfast. I rolled out the dough on my silicon mat cut the slits and filled the danish with Julia Childs triple berry jam and confectioner's cream. I braided the dough and everything looked really nice.
Then I realized that my braid was on the silicon mat and needed to be on the baking tray. !@#$%@#!!! I'd have to pick up my braid and move it! I put my silpat on the baking tray, slid a spatula under the braid and carefully transferred it to the baking tray to finish the rising process. It still looked okay at this point but the braid was not holding very well. Then it went into the hot oven...
*Note to self* Never move a braided danish stuffed full with berry and cream filling! This is what happens...

It still tasted incredibly delicious, but it looked like danish roadkill. The dough was perfect with hundreds of buttery layers and the filling OMG, amazing. So despite looking like it got hit by a car, the danish was really good. I learned a lot from this challenge, and got in quite the upper body workout! Check out all the other Daring Baker's danishes. You are so funny:) I'll be honest, the braid doesn't look perfect but I am sure the taste is delicious! You did a great job! Mine looked like a snake, a skinny cobra:))))

Your braid does NOT look like road kill...it looks generous and delicious. Glad it tasted that way, too :)

It looks great despite it splitting open. I guess it wanted everyone to see it's yummy, yummy filling so it opened up to say "Look at me!"

Although it is not technically a braid I think it's great looking, very rustic and one of a kind. :) Congratulations on a successful challenge.

Couldn't you have just baked it on the silpat instead of moving it? Silpats are oven safe aren't they?

Thanks! I rolled it out onto a roll mat which isn't oven safe and too large to put into the oven, so then I moved it onto my silpat to cook. That's when it all went downhill:o

I don't think it looks like roadkill. I think the braid pieces are just parting to give you a lovely view of what's inside. And frankly, it sounds really delicious!

Glad that it tasted good, at least! And, you know what? I've seen commercial Danish that looked like yours, so don't worry about it!

you're funny! i actually made that mistake not once, not twice, but THREE times! Just put the $%*#@ braid on the baking sheet, Susan! But it soundslike yours was so yummy - I will have to try that filling.

The taste is what matter, but you know, it doesn't look bad. All of those yummy filling ingredients just call to me anyway!! Great job and it's not a failure, it's just full of delicious goodness!
